About the Score
How is the Grain Score calculated?
The score (0–100) starts at 100 and deducts points for processing, additives, regulatory concerns, and nutrition red flags. It adds back points for certifications and whole-food composition. Read the full methodology with a worked example.
Why does Grain show six regulators?
Regulators disagree. FDA cleared a colorant EFSA later banned. FSA is reviewing a sunscreen filter the US has waved through. Rather than pick one authority, Grain shows all six — FDA, EFSA, FSA, FSANZ, Health Canada, Swissmedic — and lets you decide what to trust.
Is the Grain Score medical advice?
No. The Grain Score is an informational tool. It is not a diagnosis, not a recommendation to avoid anything specific, and not a substitute for a doctor or dietitian. Always read the product label and consult a qualified professional for health decisions.
Why does my product score differently than it does for someone else?
Scores are personalized. If you've told Grain about an allergy or a diet preference, those adjust the final number for your copy of the app. The underlying inputs are the same; the weights shift.
Scanning
Why doesn't Grain have my product?
Our database includes 3M+ products and grows daily. If a scan returns "product not found," the item may not yet be in the data sources we pull from. Email contact@sonderbusiness.com with the barcode and a photo — we'll add it and reply when it's live.
Why does Grain need camera access?
Only to scan barcodes in the moment. Grain never stores photos, video, or camera imagery. Camera access is used only while you're actively scanning.
Does Grain work offline?
Partially. Previously scanned products are cached locally and viewable offline. New scans require an internet connection to look up data and run AI analysis.
Which countries is Grain available in?
United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Switzerland. More countries will follow as regional data sources allow.
Subscriptions
How do I cancel my subscription?
Subscriptions are billed through the App Store:
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone
- Tap your name at the top
- Tap Subscriptions
- Select Grain and choose Cancel Subscription
Your subscription remains active until the end of the current billing period.
I was charged but Premium isn't showing up.
Try Profile → Settings → Restore Purchases inside the app. If that doesn't work, email us with your Apple ID order ID from the email receipt and we'll sort it within a day.
Can I get a refund?
All refund requests go through Apple. Visit reportaproblem.apple.com, find the Grain subscription, and request a refund. EU and UK consumers retain their statutory 14-day withdrawal rights.
Privacy
What data does Grain collect?
The minimum. Your email (if you make an account), your scan history, your favorites, and app analytics. The full privacy policy names every company that ever touches your data.
How do I export my data?
In the app: Profile → Account Settings → Download My Data. You'll get a JSON file with your profile, scan history, and favorites. Takes under a minute.
How do I delete my account?
Profile → Account Settings → Delete Account. All data is permanently removed within 30 days. Export your data first if you want a copy.
Account
Do I need an account to use Grain?
No. Grain works in guest mode with full scanning and scoring. You only need an account to sync across devices, save favorites to the cloud, and subscribe to Premium.
I found incorrect information — how do I report it?
Email contact@sonderbusiness.com with the product barcode and what's wrong. We verify and correct flagged issues within 48 hours.
How do I report an abusive review or user?
Tap the ⋯ menu on any review in the app and choose Report. We review all reports within 24 hours and act on violations. To block a user, open their profile and tap Block — their reviews will no longer appear to you.
