Terms of Service

By downloading, installing, or using Grain ("the app"), you agree to these Terms of Service. The app is operated by Grain ("we," "us," or "our"). If you do not agree, do not use the app.

1. The Service

Grain is an informational barcode scanner that provides ingredient analysis and ratings for food, supplement, and beauty products. Product information is sourced from public databases (OpenFoodFacts, USDA FDC), AI analysis (Google Gemini), and regulatory agencies (FDA, EFSA, FSA, FSANZ, Health Canada, Swissmedic).

1.1 Not medical advice

Grain is for informational purposes only. The Grain Score and ingredient analysis are not medical advice, nutritional advice, or a substitute for professional guidance. Consult a qualified doctor, dietitian, or healthcare provider for health decisions. We do not diagnose, treat, or prevent any medical condition.

1.2 Accuracy

We strive for accuracy, but product data may be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect. Regulations vary by region and change over time. Always check the product label itself for the most current ingredient list, allergen warnings, and usage instructions.

2. Accounts

You may use the app without an account (guest mode) with limited functionality. To sync across devices, save favorites to the cloud, and subscribe to Premium, you must create an account. You are responsible for keeping your password secure and for all activity under your account. Contact us immediately if you suspect unauthorized access.

3. Subscriptions

Grain offers auto-renewing subscriptions (monthly and annual) for Premium features. All subscriptions are billed through your Apple ID.

• Payment is charged to your Apple ID at confirmation of purchase.
• Subscriptions automatically renew unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period.
• Your account will be charged for renewal within 24 hours prior to the end of the current period.
• You can manage or cancel subscriptions at any time via Settings → [Your Name] → Subscriptions on your iOS device.
• Unused portion of a free trial is forfeited upon subscribing.
• No refunds for partial billing periods (unless required by law — EU/UK consumers have 14-day withdrawal rights).

4. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

• Reverse-engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract source code from the app.
• Scrape, republish, or sell the data provided by the app.
• Use the app to harass, defame, or harm others.
• Bypass or interfere with security features, rate limits, or the subscription system.
• Use the app for any unlawful purpose.

5. User-Generated Content (Reviews)

If you submit a review or other content to the app, you grant us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to display, distribute, and use it within the app.

5.1 Zero tolerance for objectionable content

We have a zero-tolerance policy for objectionable content. You must not post:

• Hate speech, harassment, or content targeting a protected group.
• Sexual, violent, or otherwise explicit content.
• Spam, unsolicited advertising, or links to unrelated sites.
• False, defamatory, or misleading claims about products or companies.
• Personal information about others (doxxing).
• Illegal content, including threats or incitement.

5.2 Moderation and enforcement

We reserve the right to:

• Remove any content that violates these Terms, without notice.
• Suspend or permanently ban any user who violates these Terms.
• Act on reports within 24 hours of receipt.

To report abusive content or behavior, use the in-app Report button on any review or email contact@sonderbusiness.com. You can also block another user via their profile in the app — their reviews will no longer appear to you.

6. Intellectual Property

The app, logo, design, and all content we create are owned by Grain and protected by copyright and trademark law. Product names, brand names, and certification logos shown in the app belong to their respective owners and are used for informational purposes under fair use / nominative fair use doctrines.

7. Privacy

Our Privacy Policy describes how we collect and use your information. By using the app, you consent to our data practices as described in the Privacy Policy.

8. Termination

You may stop using the app at any time. We may suspend or terminate your access if you violate these Terms, engage in abusive behavior, or if we are required to by law. Upon termination, any data you haven't downloaded may be deleted.

9. Disclaimers and Limitation of Liability

The app is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, express or implied, to the fullest extent permitted by law. We do not warrant that the app will be error-free, uninterrupted, or that product data will be accurate or complete.

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Grain is not liable for any indirect, incidental, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of the app. Our aggregate liability for any claim related to the app is limited to the greater of $50 USD or the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim.

Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits any liability that cannot be excluded by law (e.g. EU consumer rights, statutory warranties).

10. Governing Law and Disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of the jurisdiction where Grain is incorporated, without regard to conflict-of-law principles. Consumers in the EU, UK, or other jurisdictions retain the statutory rights of their local law. Any dispute will first be resolved through good-faith negotiation; if unresolved, disputes will be submitted to the competent courts of Grain's home jurisdiction.

11. Changes to These Terms

We may modify these Terms from time to time. Material changes will be notified in-app and/or via email. Continued use of the app after changes take effect constitutes acceptance.
