About the score
How is the Grain Score calculated?
For food and drinks, the score (0 to 100) combines nutrition (60%) and ingredient quality (40%). Solid foods are compared per 100 g; drinks per serving, on a stricter sugar scale. The ingredient side loses points for additives in published evidence tiers and for signs of heavy processing, and gains a little for a short list of ingredients like rolled oats, lentils and olive oil. Simple whole foods and clean-ingredient products have floors, so they can't score low.
Beauty, supplements, feminine care and household products each have their own rules, based on how you're exposed to them. The methodology has every weight and a worked example.
Which regulator does Grain use?
Grain holds ingredient status data from two regulators: the US FDA and the EU (EFSA for food, the SCCS for cosmetics). In the EU, including Ireland, you see the EU status as yours. In the UK and Switzerland Grain shows the EU status and says so, and for the UK it notes that Great Britain may differ. In Canada, Australia and New Zealand it shows the FDA status as the closest reference. In every region Grain also flags ingredients that a specific country bans. Cleaning products and period products don't have regulatory status in Grain yet. Ingredient entries can also cite international bodies such as the WHO and IARC. You choose your region when you set up the app and can change it in settings. The score itself is the same in every region.
Is the Grain Score medical advice?
No. The score is information to help you compare products. It isn't a diagnosis, a recommendation to avoid anything specific, or a substitute for a doctor or dietitian. Read the label, and ask a qualified professional about health decisions.
Why does a product show a different number for me?
It doesn't: every screen shows the same score for everyone. If you've set preferences, like certifications you prefer or ingredients you avoid, the app may show an adjustment next to the score, labelled as yours, and the breakdown says which setting moved it. If a product contains one of your allergens, Grain flags it and doesn't show a personal adjustment at all.
Why do cosmetics say "No flags" instead of "Excellent"?
For beauty, supplements, feminine care and household products, Grain can only judge the ingredients it recognizes. So those scores mostly describe what Grain recognized and flagged on the label, from "No flags" to "Serious flags". A high score isn't a safety or effectiveness rating.
Why is a product "Not rated"?
Grain doesn't rate alcohol, tobacco, pet food, infant formula or products sold as pesticides. A packaged food is also "Not rated" when its nutrition label is missing, fails Grain's checks or was only estimated, or when its ingredient list can't be read, and a beauty, supplement, feminine care or household product is "Not rated" when it has no ingredient list. You can fix the missing-label case: photograph the front of the pack and the nutrition label, and Grain tells you when the product has a score.
Scanning
Why doesn't Grain have my product?
Grain looks products up in public databases such as Open Food Facts and the USDA database, and can build an entry with AI grounded in a live web search. If a scan says "product not found", the item isn't in those sources yet. Email the barcode and a photo of the label to contact@grainios.com.
A product's information is wrong. How do I report it?
Tap "Report inaccurate data" on the product page, or email the barcode and what's wrong to contact@grainios.com. Every report is checked.
Why does Grain need camera access?
To scan barcodes, identify products from a photo, and photograph labels to complete a product's data. The camera is only on while you're on a scanning screen, and photos are sent for analysis only when you use those features.
Does Grain work offline?
Partly. Your recent scans are saved on your phone, so your history and each product's quick preview (score and ingredients) work offline. The full product page opens offline only for products you've loaded with a connection in the last 7 days. New scans generally need an internet connection.
Which countries and languages does Grain support?
Six regions: the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and Switzerland. The app is in English, German, French, Spanish and Italian.
Subscriptions
What's free and what's Premium?
Barcode scanning is free and unlimited, with the full score and ingredient breakdown. Smart Swap by barcode, Insights, News, recent US FDA recalls on Home, and all your settings are free too.
Searching Grain's catalogue by name is free. Premium unlocks Ask Grain, AI search for products Grain doesn't have yet, Explore, Photo Identify, Smart Swap by photo or search, and a notification when a product you scanned or saved changes its ingredients. Free accounts get one use of each AI feature every 30 days (AI search and Explore share one) (a whole Ask Grain conversation counts as one use), and a use only counts when the feature works. Premium is $39.99 a year or $4.99 a month, starts with 7 days free for new subscribers, and has daily fair-use limits like every plan. See pricing.
How do I cancel my subscription?
Subscriptions are billed through the App Store:
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Tap your name at the top.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Choose Grain, then Cancel Subscription.
Premium stays active until the end of the period you've paid for.
I paid, but Premium isn't showing.
Open the upgrade screen in the app and tap Restore at the top. If that doesn't work, email contact@grainios.com with the order ID from your Apple receipt.
Can I get a refund?
Refunds go through Apple: visit reportaproblem.apple.com, find the Grain subscription and request a refund. Consumers in the EU and UK keep their statutory 14-day right of withdrawal.
Privacy
What data does Grain collect?
Your email address, scan history, favourites and reviews, the questions and searches you type, and any health information you add (allergies, health conditions, ingredients to avoid, goals), including for family members you add. App analytics and crash reports are off until you say yes when the app asks. There are no ads and no ad SDKs. The privacy policy lists every service that receives data and what it gets.
How do I download my data?
In the app, open the Profile tab and tap your profile card at the top (your name) to open Account Settings, then tap Download My Data. You get a JSON file with your account data, including your profile, scan history and favourites.
How do I delete my account?
Open the Profile tab, tap your profile card at the top to open Account Settings, then tap Delete Account and confirm. Your reviews, favourites, scan history and health profile are deleted from Grain's database straight away, then the account itself is deleted. Copies in Grain's private backups are erased within 30 days, as the privacy policy says. This can't be undone, so download your data first if you want a copy. If you pay for Premium through the App Store, cancel it first in Settings > your name > Subscriptions: deleting your Grain account doesn't cancel it, and Apple keeps billing.
Account
Do I need an account to use Grain?
Yes, a free one. It keeps your settings, history, favourites and reviews in sync across devices and keeps track of free uses, so there's no anonymous mode. You can sign up with an email address or Sign in with Apple, and delete the account at any time.
How do I report an abusive review or user?
Open the menu on any review and choose Report, or choose Block User from the same menu so their reviews no longer appear for you. Every report is reviewed.
