I built Grain because a label is a marketing document.
The front of a pack is designed to sell. The back is where the facts are, in small type and a vocabulary of codes. Grain reads the back for you.
Why
Every product on a shelf is designed to be chosen. The reassuring words go on the front. The ingredient list goes on the back, in the order of weight, full of E-numbers and chemical names. And regulators in different countries reach different conclusions about the same additive.
I wanted a calm tool that reads the label faster than a person can, explains each ingredient in plain words, shows where the US FDA and the EU stand on it, and gives a score whose rules anyone can check. Grain does that for food and drinks, beauty products, supplements, feminine care and household products, in five languages.
What I believe
A score is a starting point, not a verdict, and it's never medical advice. The methodology is public: the weights, the tiers, the caps and floors, and what the model can't see. When the evidence or a regulator moves, the rules move, and the methodology page says so.
A few rules are my own judgement calls rather than regulator findings, such as treating synthetic dyes and artificial flavors as avoid-tier. The methodology labels those as stances.
The app should work quietly: scan, read the number and the reasons, move on. The decision stays yours.
Get in touch
If Grain gets a product wrong, use "Report inaccurate data" on the product page, or email the barcode and what's wrong to contact@grainios.com. Every report is checked. The same address works for anything else: the product, regulation, or an allergen Grain missed.
How Grain is paid for
A score only means something if nobody can pay for a better one.
| Source | Share |
|---|---|
| Subscriptions | All of it |
| Advertising | None |
| Payments from brands | None |
| Selling your data | Never |
Why isn't everything free? Scanning is, with no cap on how many, and so are the AI summary and ingredient notes on every product you scan. Premium pays for the extras, most of them AI features that cost money every time they run: Ask Grain, AI search, Explore, Photo Identify and Smart Swap by photo or search. AI features have daily fair-use limits on every plan.
What Grain can't do
- It isn't medical advice. It knows only the allergies and health conditions you choose to add, not your medical history, and a condition adds flags to a product without changing its score.
- Product data can be out of date. The label in your hand wins.
- For cosmetics, supplements and household products, it can only judge the ingredients it recognizes.
- Some products aren't in the database yet, and some can't be rated until someone photographs the label.
